The Holy New Hieromartyr Alexander the Deacon
Alexander the Deacon is a New Hieromartyr of the Russian Orthodox Church, numbered among the Synaxis of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. He served as a deacon and was killed in 1918 during the persecution of the Church that followed the Bolshevik Revolution. His feast is kept on September 7.
Almost nothing is recorded of his life apart from his diaconal office and his death in the early Soviet persecution. Surviving commemorative tables list him together with the priests Peter and Michael, also New Hieromartyrs of the same day, but no surname, place of ministry, or account of the circumstances of his death has been preserved in the available sources.
The Synaxis of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia is the collective commemoration of the clergy, monastics, and laity put to death during the persecution of the Orthodox Church in the Soviet period, which began in 1918. Alexander is remembered as one of this great assembly. As with many of the new martyrs of that year, his name and rank survive in the calendar while the details of his life and martyrdom do not.
