Life

Saint Bessarion, Archbishop (Metropolitan) of Larissa, was a sixteenth-century hierarch in Ottoman-ruled Thessaly, best known as the founder of the Monastery of the Savior Christ at Dousiko. He is sometimes designated Bessarion II to distinguish him from an earlier bishop of the same see. He is commemorated on September 15.

By tradition he was born around 1490 in the village of Porta, near Trikala in Thessaly, and given the name Vasileios, with the family surname recorded as Tsigaridas or Ganas. Raised by Orthodox parents, he is said to have entered upon the monastic life from the age of ten. After passing through the ranks of deacon and presbyter, he was ordained a bishop, and was eventually elected Metropolitan of Larissa, a position he held until his death in 1540.

As metropolitan, Bessarion is remembered for combining the care of his flock with practical works of charity and public benefit at a time of hardship under Ottoman rule. The sources relate that he ransomed captives held in bondage and that he designed and supervised the construction of stone bridges over the rivers of the region, including a bridge over the Aspropotamos. His best-known foundation, the Dousiko monastery, was established as an avaton, closed to female visitors, a rule that is reported to remain in force.

Episcopal career

Accounts of Bessarion's early ministry relate that he was ordained Bishop of Domeniko and Elassona while still a young man, but that the diocese did not receive him, and that he instead served alongside Metropolitan Mark of Larissa. He is said to have been made Exarch of Stagoi (Kalambaka) before his elevation to the metropolitan see.

The sources differ on the precise year he became Metropolitan of Larissa: one tradition places his election in 1522 under Patriarch Jeremiah, while another dates his tenure to 1526/7. All agree that he held the see until his death in 1540.

The Dousiko monastery

Bessarion founded, together with his brother Ignatius, the Monastery of the Savior Christ known as Dousikou, in the village later called Agios Vissarion (formerly Dusan) in the area of Pyli. The monastery was built between roughly 1527 and 1535 on the site of an earlier ruined monastery dedicated to Christ.

He established the monastery as avaton, meaning it was not to receive female visitors. The foundation was later expanded by his nephew Neophytos II, who served as metropolitan in the mid-sixteenth century and constructed a replacement katholikon that still survives.

Death and relics

Saint Bessarion is recorded as having died in 1540, at about the age of fifty, on either the thirteenth or the fifteenth of September; he is commemorated on September 15. By tradition his skull is preserved at the Dousiko monastery, where it is associated with reports of myrrh and of healings.
