Saint Kallinikos, Metropolitan of Edessa, Pella and Almopia

Life

Kallinikos was Metropolitan of Edessa, Pella and Almopia in northern Greece from 1967 until his death in 1984. He was remembered by his contemporaries as an ascetic and prayerful archpastor who joined the episcopal office to a monastic discipline, and who was esteemed as a preacher and spiritual father. He is commemorated on August 8, and was numbered among the saints by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2020.

He was born Dimitrios Poulos in 1919 in the village of Sitaralona in Aetolia-Acarnania, into a poor and pious family. He studied at the Theological School of the University of Athens, graduating in 1942, and afterward served the Metropolis of Aitolia and Acarnania as secretary and preacher. In 1957 he was tonsured a monk at the Monastery of Myrtia, taking the name Kallinikos, and in the same year was ordained deacon and priest.

Consecrated Metropolitan of Edessa, Pella and Almopia in 1967, he gave himself to the pastoral care of his flock, to charity, and to a life of prayer. Sources describe him as an ascetic bishop whose philanthropy was generous to the point of leaving himself with nothing. After an illness of several months he reposed in 1984, and was widely venerated in the decades that followed. The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate formally proclaimed his sainthood in 2020.

Early Life and Formation

By the external accounts, the future metropolitan was born Dimitrios Poulos on January 26, 1919, in Sitaralona, a village in the region of Agrinio in Aetolia-Acarnania, to a poor and devout family. He completed his theological studies at the Theological School of the University of Athens, graduating in 1942.

He then served the Metropolis of Aitolia and Acarnania as its secretary and as a preacher. In 1957 he was tonsured a monk at the Monastery of Myrtia and received the name Kallinikos; in the same year he was ordained to the diaconate and the priesthood by his brother, Metropolitan Konstantinos of Didymoteicho.

Episcopal Ministry

On June 25, 1967, Kallinikos was enthroned as Metropolitan of Edessa, Pella and Almopia. The sources present him as an ascetic bishop who united the monastic discipline of his earlier years with the demands of the episcopal office, and who placed prayer at the center of his contact with his people.

His ministry was marked by preaching, by attentive pastoral care, and by charity so generous that, according to one account, it left him penniless. He is also remembered for founding churches dedicated to lesser-known saints. He governed the metropolis for seventeen years, until his death.

Repose and Glorification

After an illness of several months Kallinikos reposed in 1984; the external accounts place his death in Athens in early August, and his feast is kept on August 8. His funeral was attended by a large number of hierarchs, clergy and faithful.

His memory was cherished in the years after his death, and on June 23, 2020, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, meeting at the Orthodox Center in Chambesy near Geneva, formally numbered him among the saints of the Orthodox Church.
