Our Venerable Father Cleopas of Sihăstria

Life

Saint Cleopas of Sihăstria (born Constantin Ilie, 10 April 1912 – 2 December 1998) was a Romanian abbot, preacher, and spiritual father, widely regarded as one of the most influential elders of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the twentieth century. He spent nearly his entire monastic life in connection with the Sihăstria Monastery in the Neamț region, where his preaching and confessional guidance drew large numbers of pilgrims. He was glorified as a saint by the Romanian Orthodox Church, with his feast kept on December 2, the day of his repose.

Born the fifth of ten children in a peasant family at Sulița, in Botoșani County, he entered the Sihăstria Hermitage in December 1929 together with his brother Vasile, and was tonsured a monk on 2 August 1937 with the name Cleopa. Several of his siblings also embraced the monastic life. He was ordained hierodeacon in December 1944 and hieromonk in January 1945, and when the hermitage was raised to the rank of monastery in 1947 he was made archimandrite.

Cleopas lived through the period of communist persecution of the Church in Romania, during which he spent extended periods hidden in the mountains and forests around the monastery. He served for a time as abbot of Slatina Monastery before returning to Sihăstria, where from 1964 he acted as confessor and spiritual father to the community and to the many faithful who sought him out. He became known for his vivid, accessible preaching and his deep familiarity with the writings of the Church Fathers.

Monastic Formation and Discipleship

By tradition, Cleopas was for three years the disciple of the elder Paisie Olaru, with whom he is closely associated and alongside whom he was later canonized. He entered the Sihăstria Hermitage as a young man and rose gradually through the monastic and clerical ranks, being ordained hierodeacon on 27 December 1944 and hieromonk on 23 January 1945.

When the hermitage became a monastery in 1947 he was elevated to archimandrite. He was appointed abbot of Slatina Monastery, serving there from 1949 to 1956, before returning to Sihăstria, where in 1964 he took up the role of confessor for the whole community.

Years of Persecution and Hiding

Under the atheist communist regime that came to power after the Second World War, Cleopas withdrew repeatedly into the mountains to avoid arrest. According to accounts of his life, he hid in the surrounding woods for some six months in 1948, escaped to the Stânișoara Mountains together with the hieromonk Arsenie Papacioc between 1952 and 1954, and spent several further years in the Neamț Mountains before returning to Sihăstria in 1964.

He is reported to have chosen to remain in Romania rather than settle on Mount Athos, a decision the tradition connects with the counsel of Saint Justin Popović, in the conviction that he could be of greater spiritual help to others by staying among his own people.

Spiritual Fatherhood and Glorification

From his return to Sihăstria until his death, Cleopas was sought out as a confessor and teacher, and his sermons and counsels remain widely read in Romania. By tradition he became, in 1987, the monastic godfather of the future Patriarch Daniel of Romania.

He reposed on 2 December 1998 at Sihăstria Monastery at the age of eighty-five. The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church moved toward his glorification, anticipated in July 2024, and his canonization was proclaimed together with that of the elder Paisie Olaru as part of the Romanian Patriarchate's centennial commemorations.
